The flag of Ireland, also known as the Irish tricolour, consists of three vertical stripes of equal width. The stripe that is closest to the hoist side of the flag is green, representing Ireland’s Catholic community. The middle stripe is white, symbolizing peace between Catholics and Protestants. The stripe on the right is orange, representing Ireland’s Protestant community.
The national flag was first introduced by Irish nationalist Thomas Francis Meagher in 1848, during the Irish Rebellion. The design was later adopted by the Irish Republic during the Easter Rising in 1916 and has since become the official flag of Ireland.
